Before the old man began to speak, I thought 'Ah finally, there's a voice of reason, ' but was then thoroughly disappointed once he spoke.

He misspoke. He said “This is our moment to shine”, but he meant to say “This is our moment to glow”.

I love how this character is the representation of those old politicians who started their career during the mid and late period of Stalin. A time period were iron will, stubborness and terror was enough to face any problem. But times change and those guys were not only political relics, but they were dangerous in a crisis like Chernobyl.

This scenes Justifies the line " Being old doesn't mean you are wise".

In this scene he refused help to get up. However we later see him getting on an evacuation bus being assisted by someone. A powerful metaphor for the state of affairs.

This is such a powerful scene. It is like the speech. When everyone is panicking, the wise old man starts to speak, and everyone is inspired. Except this time the head bullshitter made the speech, and caused even more death.

People here be like “Thought the old man was going to be the voice of reason” but forget that the only way you live to that age in Soviet Russia is by being an absolute believer in the party

The level of delusion here is over 9000

This is how I imagine China reacting to the Coronavirus.

When you think the older wiser man is going to stand up and counsel everyone to do the right thing. Instead he counsels the opposite. Great screenwriting.

When we though he was the one that was going to made a speech to save the people... and he did the opposite.

I literally shat myself when he said to cut the phone lines and to stave off the spread of "misinformation". It's almost creepy how they consider the truth as misinformation.

I can smell this scene... stale cigarette smoke, dry wood, and late 70's lacquer... lol

So many people died because of their pride.

The little growl that comes through in his voice on "no one leaves" is just terrifying

It's amazing how you can go from "The purpose of the state is to care for and protect the people" to "Seal off the city, cut the phone lines, and make note of those people that ask the questions we don't want them to ask" in the same speech.

_This is how liberty dies... with a thunderous applause_

Notice how the worker at the end is not applauding, he is not happy, he doesnt even crack a smile. He is just listening, helplessly knows that what the old man said was just B.S and the truth is: they are all doomed.

The way they made Donald Sumpter eye's darken by lighting is pure genius. Making him look like a dealer of death, the actions of this person caused a lot more deaths then needed. Only if it was taken a bit more seriously a lot more people would've been alive. But this man took the cake when it came to his acting along with the lighting playing a major role in this scene.
