This is one of the most underrated songs of all time. This song is an all-time classic.

The lyrics indicate two people who know they're not good for each other but every time they see each other they don't care if it's bad. That's why the song has an intense feel.

I always thought this was truly one of the top tunes in the early eighties ..Very catchy .

I recently heard this song again after what must have been almost 30 years, and it was one of the great "HOLY SHIT" moments in my life. I had completely forgotten about it, but when I heard it again, it was like being reunited with an old friend. Great song, one of the best of the 80s.

Donnie Iris born Donald Ierace, pronounced the same way, is my cousin! He had a number one with a group called the Jaggerz in the early 70s called The Rapper, which you should check out. One of the nicest people I ever met in my life and he's still doing concerts in his 70s. So excited you did this, thank you!

Donnie Iris, the pride of Pittsburgh, PA (my hometown). I've seen him a number of times, and he puts on a show. He's almost 80 and still performing.

Other good songs from Donnie:

1) "That's The Way Love Oughta Be"
2) Stagedoor Johnny
3) "Love is Magic"
4) "The Promise
5) "King Cool"....and more

Brad is right on this one. It's about a relationship that won't work (and they both know it), but they can't resist the physical aspect of it when they cross paths ("here we go again....our mind's saying no, but our heart's were talking faster")

So I used live in Beaver PA, which where Donnie lives. I used to go this local bar to watch the Pirates games. Took me a couple times to realize the dude I always ended up hanging out with and smoking cigars out back with was Donnie Iris.

He's a really cool guy and he's still out there performing and killing it. His voice has held up really well.

Brad & Lex, he had a minor hit "Love Is Like a Rock." He wrote and sang lead vocals on the Jaggerz #2 hit "The Rapper" (1970), and he was in Wild Cherry(after Play That Funky Music)

I first heard the song in 1980 on a German radio station when I stationed with the US Air Force at Rhein-Main Air Base near Frankfurt. I liked the song so much I named by daughter, who was born in 1993, after it! Very cool. That is how a dad selects a name for his daughter. 🙂

Loved watching Lex when the chorus first kicks in…that’s the kind of joy that this song brings

FINALLY! How many times have I voted for this in chat and it would always lose? Way too many! I thought this song was doomed to be the one song that would NEVER be played. So glad you finally played it, even if I didn't catch it live.

I saw him open for Joan Jett at a rib fest at the Eastwood mall about 30 years ago. When she came on stage, she was in awe of how he had the crowd whipped into a frenzy. She said she strolled through the crowd pretty much unnoticed during his performance. She said she had never been able to do that. Just an awesome performer.

Donnie's nickname was "king cool". his voice and energy (especially at live shows) was electric. he was definitely a powerhouse for those who knew (northeast/ Ohio? Pittsburgh area. "Love is like a rock", "Do you compute", "human evolution", "this time it must be love", just to name a few. Donnie is a great rabbit hole to go down

Brad is correct. "Ah! Leah!" is about a star-crossed relationship.

This song is one of the most underrated songs of the 1980s. It was a Top 40 hit, but not a huge hit, peaking at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 28, 1981. The classic rock-and-roll sound and the passion in Donnie Iris's vocals are great, but the chanting vocals in the chorus are what reeled me in.

Donnie Iris is a native of the Pittsburgh area, being born in Ellwood City, PA and living today in Beaver Falls, PA. During the 1970s, he was a member of The Jaggerz when they hit big with "The Rapper" (#2 in 1970), and then joined Wild Cherry after they hit big with "Play That Funky Music" (#1 in 1976). As a solo musician in the 1980s, he achieved a substantial regional fan base in much of the Northeastern and Midwestern U.S., and developed a bit of a cult fan base in the rest of the U.S. In all, he had seven hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1980-1985, including three Top 40 hits. These are his Top 40 hits in chronological order:

"Ah! Leah!" (#29 in 1981)
"Love Is Like A Rock" (#37 in 1982)
"My Girl" (#25 in 1982)

Though "Ah! Leah!" was not his biggest hit on the Hot 100, it has become his signature song, and it gets a fair amount of airplay on several "flashback" radio shows, such as the Retro Pop Reunion, as one prominent example.

Donny Iris Purposely Portrayed Himself As Nerdy, , Geeky & Buddy Holly-ish.
