I grew up with her music from the time it began in the 1960’s. The first album I bought as a teen was the iconic “Make Way For Dionne” with a number of her biggest hits. I’ve always loved her songs.

When I was a teenager back in the 80s, when I heard Dionne for the first time, I was fascinated by her voice and her way of performing. I dreamed of being able to see her in a theater someday, but since I am Cuban, for me those were just dreams, because it was very difficult for her to come to give a concert in my country. But fate wanted me to go live in another country in 1994 and for her to come to give a concert a few years later. It was a dream come true, to be able to see her as I dreamed and in the front row.

Ah, she got a first rate tribute, which doesn't always happen. Cynthia Erivo was just stunning - that very complicated song just flowed out of her and soared up into the balcony. They were all great and Ms. Gladys Knight is still the prettiest dame around closing out with a classic. Clive Davis shows up, JHud tells the story, Miss Debbie Allen hosts and Chloe lays her sweet voice and cool vibe to Walk On By. Well DESERVED Ms. Warwick. There's no other elegant, sophisticated pop singer with soul AND those kind of pipes. Dionne Warwick. ❤

In December of 1966, when I was still 13, I went on my first date to see Ms. Dionne at Blinstrub’s nightclub in Boston. I was obsessed with her distinctive, soothing, and heartfelt voice, and her glorious interpretations of so many David-Bacharach songs. I particularly loved her “Here I Am” album, and it became part of my DNA. Sitting ringside, enraptured by how beautiful she looked in a chiffon and sequined gown, and that voice which transcended what I knew on discs or the radio, someone in management must’ve noticed these two kids in a sea of adults, who all seemed to have cigarettes and drinks in in their hands, and informed us that after the show we could go backstage to meet her! With my Instamatic camera, I took some pictures of her, and still have a close up shot, with her smiling in her after show red velvet robe. I seem to remember my date and I being speechless, and this was long before taking selfies. I’m glad I didn’t pass out.
In my youth, she was the stuff that dreams are made of, and I’m forever grateful that despite having strict parents, they had no hesitation in helping to make that magical night happen.
Here I am now, to say Congratulations Ms. Dionne Warwick, with Thanks for this musical memory, and so many more.
