FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this science fiction thriller, a spaceship is transporting a disparate group of people to a far-away galactic outpost called New Mecca. Mechanical failures cause the craft to crash-land on an abandoned planet that has three suns and no night. The only member of the crew to survive is junior pilot Carolyn Fry (Radha Mitchell), while the passengers who climb from the wreckage include a police officer (Cole Hauser) and the prisoner he's transporting, Riddick (Vin Diesel). As Fry and the other survivors survey the abandoned dwellings of the desert world while trying to decide what to do next, one of them is killed by a mutant creature living in an abandoned mining site. The vicious and bloodthirsty mutants, who live underground, have killed all previous inhabitants of the planet; they cannot stand sunlight, but research reveals that the planet has a total eclipse every 22 years, and the latest one is due any moment.

It's a movie of opposites. When it gets dark, everything that was in the light is reversed. The man with children has none, the hero is a drug addict, the villain is the hero, the boy is a girl, and the pilot who was willing to kill everyone to save herself sacrifices herself to save everyone.

Pitch black is an underrated classic. I for one rate Vins performance as Riddick better/top than anything else hes done.

Still can't believe this was 20 years ago, filmed in Australia with semi low budget. When I first saw this, the way he played Riddick's character, I knew he will rise to become a super star. So many of us wanted to be like him, body like his. Then when The Fast & The Furious came out, we all had to watch it and said the muscley guy from Pitch Black is in it, not Paul Walker. And you've nailed it ever since then.
Well Done Vin, you came a long way & became so successful all started with this.

I like this version better than what they said in escape from Butcher bay.

I like the idea that Riddick is such an outcast, a predator, that he chooses to change himself to live in the dark. He can no longer live like normal humans and needs wielding googles to support the light.

I need to say that vin diesel was and still is the absolute perfect actor for roles like this he can really sell himself being a total badass

On the DVD Version, English Dub, when Riddick looks at Jack, you can hear a bassy "swoosh" noise the moment he looks at Jack, its a small part of the same sound effect used in all Video games when Riddick turns on his eyeshine ability. Similar to when a Predator changes his biomask filter mode. It's not that audible in this clip, but it is faintly noticeable. And, no, it's no sound from the gear or ship, I've isolated the portion with Audacity and listened to it a billion times in a loop, it's a foreign sound that happens exactly the moment he looks at Jack. Always found that fascinating. Kind of like the sound in MGS5 when you move the camera close to your character quickly, it also makes a "swoosh" noise. Fascinating!

I remember watching this in the theater and that jump at 1:46 made me scream. I'm happy to say though that I wasn't the only one.

There are times when I wonder if Riddick really is the killer that many claim he is. The dude was willing to save people he only knew for a few days, against his survival instincts. Maybe he has killed but it was out of self-defense or to save someone else. Or maybe he really is a killer and this is a story about a murderer who is finding his humanity again. Either way, I like that it doesn't confirm nor deny anything that is said about Riddick.

I still hate the ending where Fry sacrifices herself. But it forever left a mark on Riddick seeing such a noble act. Fry in this scene is getting titillated by the Furyan alpha male pheromones lol.

They humanized Riddick too much in the sequels. It was his almost alien nature that made him a appealing character in the first place. I loved Pitch Black
