In Empire Strikes Back it is explained that the reason why han solo was frozen into carbonite is because vader wanted to test it on him before using it on luke. And if i told you this scene was iconic, you’d probably respond with...

But the decision to freeze han solo in carbonite was not part of the original plan. In fact, han solo was never supposed to be captured by vader in the first place. The original intention for the infamous smuggler was to have him fly off with chewie on the millennium falcon, and to have him return in the subsequent film return of the jedi.

However, behind the scenes there was plenty of uncertainty about harrison ford's return to the franchise. Unlike Hamill and Fisher, Harrison was only contracted for one star wars sequel. And to further add to the uncertainty, he was enjoying a growing popularity in his new role as indiana jones. The uncertainty ultimately led to the decision to freeze his character in carbonite, stalling the character’s arc. Thankfully, star wars producer Howard Kazanjian managed to convince Harrison to return for the final film, changing the course of the galaxy far far away.

There was also a whole script written for empire strikes back without han in it because there was similar uncertainty about Ford not returning after a new hope

Han begged Vader for mercy, but Vader gave him the cold shoulder.

I’d like to know how the original story even led to Han flying off with Chewie. How does he evade Vader and Boba? What about Leia, Lando, and the droids, and does Luke still leave Dagobah?

Wait...ESB was released in 1980, Raiders didn't come out until '81. Indiana Jones couldn't have influenced this decision.

What’s the difference between freezing him and flying away? Either way he can come back / thaw out, when we need him to—and not at other times.

I don't understand how that's the real reason. There's an in-universe reason and a meta reason. They're but the reason.

This makes no sense, why would vader have to test it out? He, Obi wan, rex, echo, ahsoka... were all frozen in carbonite in clone wars and survived

They didn’t want people to mistake that he was a Jedi when he returned… in “Return of the Jedi”

Harrison wanted to kill the character since the beginning… well, he made it in the end
