"Vermeil" is pronounced "vare-may." It's French for sterling silver with a heavy gold plating. Most traditionally, it's used for luxury objects that would be too expensive to make in solid gold. Like, even for most royalty it would be excessive to make a soup tureen in solid gold, so you'd have it made in vermeil.

My family and I on a trip to DC accidentally walked through the White House's back yard. I was a kid and didn't notice, but my parents did- there were people following us at a distance. The only other people around were those in business attire. It was so quiet and nice. When we left (through a checkpoint) we were bewildered. There was no checkpoint where we walked in, just an open gate. If we weren't a wrong step away from being swatted I'd want to go back!

There use to be tours of the White House. I went on a White House tour in the summer of 1963, a few months before Kennedy was assassinated.

There is an actual White House tour you can do. There’s videos of it and you need to do a background check. But after that if you’re accepted (1-2 weeks before your visit), you can go through the White House.
