22 Hands-Johnny Magee.mov

This Artist Documentary by Johnny Magee provides a rare glimpse into the manufacturing process that is taking place at the Portmeirion Group Factory in Stoke-on-Trent. Evidence of the 22 pairs of hands through which each piece passes in its production life cycle....the film records the movements and rythms of the workplace and the making process.

The sound track to the film is 'An der schönen blauen Donau' by Johann Strauss II, known by it's english name 'The Blue Danube'.

The factory, like an orchestra, has with each person playing an individual role to create a 'whole'. The waltz as a dance implies a choreography, timing and rhythm of manufacturing.

There are also references to Stanley Kubrick's film of Arthur C Clarke's novel 2001 a Space Odyssey. As well as a further pastiche of 'The Blue Danube', '22 hands' alludes to its ethereal use of narrative, it's sense of journey and visual style.
