Unboxing the Minecraft Eiffel Tower

Here is Holly unboxing a printed copy of the Eiffel Tower that I originally built in Minecraft. Our friend Eric Haines wrote a program called Mineways to export data from Minecraft that could then be uploaded to a 3D printing service, such as Shapeways. He sent the printed tower to us as a surprise Christmas gift. Skip to 1:10 in the video to see the model itself.

@DTZMasters Hah, that's a great idea. I don't think Mineways exports torches as blocks anymore (that was an incomplete feature), so this might be a rare model that makes such painting easy...

@aberyf I was somewhat familiar with 3D printing before this, and I was still surprised at the results from this, in particular that it is in COLOR. (In the past these things were printed in single colors and then hand-painted; now the printer works directly in color.)

Actually, it does: just export as solid colors or as "rich colors" instead of full textures and torches get output as blocks.

@bluebowmn That one was about $25. You could export from Mineways with a bigger block size, but of course it gets more expensive. Have a look at mineways.com.

No, those are torches that I placed along the edges and sides. Mineways would export those as yellow blocks, at least at the time this video was done.

This is colored sandstone, really the best option for Minecraft prints.

I think that the torches as blocks makes the models look nice... But at the same time, it uses more blocks to build the model, and that makes the model cost more.
