The "wall follower" rule does not work if the starting point of the maze is in the middle or if there are bridges and crossovers introduced.

I honestly figured that out as i was a kid (i often solved mazes in the typical "kids-newsletter" or drew mazes...

Im rly suprised about the comments, asking if it would also work with the opposite hand xD

Also i think you should have mentioned that it would only work if you are entering the maze from the beginning... > (if you are thrown somewhere random in you could loop yourself through section which arent connected to the walls)

Great, looks like we can also use the left hand and move along the wall on the left side.

This does not work in whats called a “disjoint maze”. Its pretty self explanatory but a disjoint maze is a maze where not every wall is joined to the outline. So the reason the right hand rule doesnt work is because you may start on a non conjoined wall that will take you around in circles making this unreliable in this scenario. You may know a such disjoint maze if you are familiar with the backrooms which is designed to not be escapable. This is a prime example of where the right hand rule would not work.

Also some mazes such as labyrinths will defy the right hand rule too

this is something almsot every child knows... to stick to 1 side.. and follow along to eventually get to the exit.

but there are others far more interesting and faster ways to solve mazes.
that are way faster then that.

it doesnt work for mazes that have their exit in the middle (technically using underground tunnels or overpasses to get out) and surrounded by islands of walls. Changing hand and starting over wont help. Also to consider, if your goal is not to get out but to go to a specific garden, a statue or a pool, or something nice inside the maze, some are not reachable using a hand rule.

This is what firefighters do when they are going through a building that is filled with smoke making it impossible to see, they just do it on hands and knees and have to search for people at the same time
