Rihanna Loves Piñatas From This LA Artist | Master Craft

Editor's Note: The video states that the artist received a phone call from Drake, but that is incorrect. Rihanna commissioned a piñata of Drake, but Drake did not personally call Yesenia Prieto.

There’s a big chance you smashed a piñata or two growing up. But have you ever wondered what it takes to make one? Behind the layers of papier-mâché and colorful fringe you might remember from birthdays and celebrations is the craft of piñata making. This craft remains alive and well today thanks to family-owned companies like Piñata Design Studio. Its owner, Yesenia Prieto, is a third-generation piñata maker who uses social media and her family's background in sculpting to create some of the most intricate and in-demand piñatas in Los Angeles, with prices ranging from as little as $10 to $3,000. Her clients include Google, Rihanna, Ninja, and Adam Sandler.

I *love* that you are keeping a tradition going; that you use recycled materials; that you aren't "precious" with your work, as you understand it will be destroyed, yet you make fabulous, creative, original pieces. The heads in the show will live on, as well as the joy the kids have with your pieces. It is fantastic that you have met so many other talented people, and as one visual artist to another, congratulations on your success!

My mother made the best piñatas. I would help her with the "ingrudo" flour glue, cut the and turn the paper, it is truly an art work. Yes they are made to be destroyed, but so are sandcastles and chalk art.

I started to make pinatas..opened a little shop. I was amazed what could be done with waste cardboard and paper.

Wow, what a shock to read the anti-cultural, easily offensive remarks in the comments! They have no respect for Mexican Christian Culture. Creation of Traditional Mexican Pinata was originally a Star, filled with candies, items, the star represented "Temptation" to Christian Mexicans. A child, or adult, was blind folded, representing Christian Faith. The Star Pinata represented "Temptations." The child, teen, adult, blind-fold, was turned around, disoriented, holding a stick, the person represented Christian faith to resist "Temptations." Hitting the Pinata Star was breaking/taking power away from "Temptations, " "evil vanquished, " & all the children, teens, adults could share in the multiple bounty together as a group. This religious respect to faith was never interpreted as "violence."

Cut holes into they're skin and fill the holes with a mixture of salt and lemon juice, and then repeat that every 20 minutes or less.
Edit: I just saw this is the wrong video but im gonna keep this comment here.

Why are piñatas "destroyed"? Let's Remember that piñatas were used in old Mexico to teach people about the impermanence of the material world and human life.
