1. Challenges of political succession:-
A- from Nehru to shastri = after Nehru's death, shastri was the country's prime minister from 1964 to 1966.
B- from shastri to Indira Gandhi = after shastri's death, Indira Gandhi was the country's prime minister from 1966 to 1977 and 1980-84.

2. Fourth general election 1967 :-
A- context of the election = the period was fraught with grave economic crisis resulting grave economic crisis resulting from successive failure of monsoons, wide spread droughts, decline in agricultural production, serious food shortage, depletion of foreign exchange reserves drop in industrial production and exports combined with a sharp rise in military expenditure and diversion of resources from planning and economic development.
B- non Congressism = opposition parties were in the forefront of organising public protest and pressurising the government.
C- electrol verdict = in 1967 the fourth general elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies were held. The results jolted the Congress at both the national and state levels.
D- coalitions:- since no single party had got majority various non Congress parties came together to form joint legislative parties.
E- defection:- after 1967, general elections, the breakaway, legislation played an important role in installing non- Congress government in 3 states.

3. The 1971 election and restoration of Congress:-
A- the contest = parties and the party systems in India to loaded against Congress (R).
B- the outcome and after = the Congress (R) - CPI alliance won more seats and votes than the Congress had ever won in the first four general elections the Congress was not in power in almost all the states.
C- restoration:- Indira Gandhi restored the Congress by changing the nature of the Congress system itself.
