Literary techniques are language devices that writers use in order to enhance their descriptions. Examples include similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia - the list goes on!

These questions are pretty self-explanatory; you will be asked to identify which specific literary technique has been used by the writer. You may have to look for a particular device, or you may be given a quotation and have to identify which one has been used.

In longer descriptive answers, you may also be asked to explain the effect of that device and why the author has chosen to use it. This means that you have to think about the meaning of the device and what it adds to the themes and events of the story.

In this video, we will understand what Literary Devices - Identification & Analysis questions are, what skills they test, how to identify such questions and tips to answer them effectively in the 11+ exams. The students will learn how to effectively paraphrase strange or unusual sentences/wording.
