Fun fact: the Hull was an experimental platform in the late 1970s. Those 8 inchers was suppose to go on to the new Spruance class missile destroyers, but at the end the US navy scrapped the plan and stuck with 5 inch guns. Hull was sunk as a target in 1998

the reason why the guns fit on a DD is because this is a fair bit more advanced than the DMs. the hint is in the designation, this is the single 8"/55 Mark 71 mount, developed for the Major Caliber Light Weight Gun (MCLWG) program of the '70s. historically, USS Hull was the testbed for this weapon system, so she received one example in place of the usual 5"/54 gun arming her sisters. they basically wanted a new shore bombardment weapon with more punch than the typical 5" gun could provide after the last remaining Clevelands and Baltimores aged out of service. the program got cancelled because the Carter administration was looking to cut defense spending.

so tl;dr, there's been 20+ years of technological development between the DM's 8"/55RF Mark 16 guns, and the Hull's 8"/55 Mark 71 mount (the gun itself was either a Mark 28 or Mark 32 8"/55 gun, the USN switched naming conventions from the guns themselves to the mounts they came in after WW2). also no armor on these gun mounts. they end up a little less than twice as heavy as the regular Sherman 5"/54 Mark 42 mounts, so not even insanely heavy as far as weapon systems go.

another thing to note is weegee has brought the rate of fire up from what is historical, these guns achieved a (still admittedly impressive) rate of fire of 12 rounds a minute, or a 5s reload, during testing.

There's one of these guns still in existence over at the US Navy's Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA at 38°19'39.17"N, 77° 1'32.55"W. It's part of a "gun line" that is used for R&D.

Been playing a lot of Tromp just because I want unique experiences, and based on that Hull looks like a must buy. Like Tromp I see why she will do in today's meta, you need long range guns/torps/drops and healing/speed to survive. And honestly I just want to play unique ships after playing WoWS since beta, and I don't want them super over powered. Hull is powerful, but she can be punished hard if played poorly or a DD killer gets a jump on you.

Also been playing Groningen since I got her recently too. She might of been meta years ago but the days of the smoke/hydro/no torps spammers is gone with ships sitting so far away, or just willing to push you the moment the know where you are. Especially with how much radar/hydro is on strong DD's at tier 9/10. Team spotting is not much of a thing, and doing it yourself is crazy powerful especially if you can farm at the same time.

The Hull is basically a Spruance class DD built in an alternate reality where missile technology doesn’t exist for some reason. Historically, the Hull WAS a Spruance class DD which was used as a test bed for the lightweight 8”/55 Mk 71 gun system. She only carried one for testing, however, and it was eventually removed.

The WoWs Hull is an essentially Spruance which lost all of its missiles and had its aft reconfigured for a second and third gun.

There’s an argument to be made for the USN to move on from the 5”/62 to modern version of the 8”/55 for ships that expect to be operating in the littorals. The 5” gun was great for its day but the need for a heavy DP gun that can be used against aerial and surface targets has kind of disappeared.

The Mk 71 could absolutely be used for plinking drones, helos and other slow-moving aerial threats but if you want o knock down fast-movers you really need to use missile interceptors, EW or lighter weight dakka in the 40mm to 76mm range.

I'm finding light cruisers are struggling more in these meta nowadays and now I see there's more pain for them to deal with... That said, I was looking forward to the hull and it seems, frankly broken so far. Will definitely be getting it.

I am currently grinding the Elbing line with ships, witch have, ,bad DPM". If you AP pen is good AND you have improved pen-angles it does not matter. Even in the bad Z-31, I got to 60-70k damage like it was nothing, while shooting at range open water or close range from smoke . Now this ship is pretty interesting for me, because it brings a similar playstyle, but with a super heal.

PSA about Incheon: even if you already have all the other 6 ships in your port, you can receive duplicates of them before Incheon will drop. I found this out the hard way. The event is much worse than it sounds. I'd love to see this point amplified by CCs, so players can avoid feeling scammed.
