The #1 Skill You Need for Every Badminton Discipline

Every category in badminton has its own fascinating aspects and differences that makes it fun to watch but also fun to play. On the highest level badminton is very specialized as you need specific skills for each category. In this video I want to break down a few key differences and show you my favourite skills for singles, doubles and mixed doubles!

A few additional things about:

WS: One important thing that I have to add here: The Slice becomes extremely powerful when it is deceptive and looks like a straight smash or clear so always practice those 3 shots from the same movement! Here you can find my Tutorial for Slices and Reverse Slices:

MS: If you want to find some good video examples for amazing skills in defence I would look for: Lee Chong Wei (super fast and very low center of gravity), Kento Momota (calm and smooth) or Chen Long (controled and balanced)

WD: Of course a good positioning and movement means nothing without proper racket skills. Also here you can say a solid defense is key, because it will allow you to play to the rear court and move the other pair without being afraid of loosing to many rallies from it (compared to MD)

MD: I talked about serve and receive but also the 3rd and 4th shot are crucial if you want to win the first lift. So always have an idea what you want to cover after your serve or receive and also talk to your partner and tell him what you are about to do and what you want to cover.

The Diamond Shape pattern is a great way to practice service situation as it limits the options but still gives both sides a lot of possibilities: This pattern excludes two very important options: the push to right and left corner and especially on a lower level the push to the backhand of the opponents is sometimes the most powerful weapon in the game. On a higher level these pushes can be dangerous, especially when you receive a serve that goes to the T with good quality.

XD: Just like in WD I also have to name the importance of the defensive skills, especially for the girl. If the difference between boy and girl is too big in terms of defensive skills it will become to easy to score for the other pair, as they can always aim for the opponent girl from every position without being afraid of getting countered.

-- About the stats -----------------------------------------------------

For the stats about players that compete in singles and doubles I checked the world rankings in the middle of january.

The stat about the moment when rallies end in MD, WD and XD contains all rallies from the Seminfinals, Finals and Bronze Medal Matches of the Olympics in Tokio 2021.

I like how I learnt something from all the sections even though I am a mens singles player. Very helpful!

These kind of in-depth badminton videos seem really rare, thanks for this one. Especially liked the concrete training examples you can do to improve said critical skills!

such great strategic points! would love a video more on how to be quick on serve returns, been trying to be aggressive but feel like i always default to the same shots.

Popov brothers are the closest current players I know to reach high level in singles and doubles category. Sincerely hope they can finally break the "curse"

Tobias! Where have you been?! So glad to have seen your previous video of the Olympics but you have been MIA for so long! I hope all is good and well, and look forward to seeing more of your videos, hopefully more regularly, in the future.

I really like the part where you mentioned about serving to the opponent's grip change. That is one often overlooked element when trying to jam up the opponent and force them to make a split second change and/or give a weaker response to the serve.

I'd love to see content or just get book recommendations regarding badminton strategy in general. Like what to play when and how to choose where to play, which shot to play etc - how to deal with the mental game etc - is there any book or content anyone can recommend?

2:07 No offence, but I believe, especially in Men's singles, the one that controls the net wins the match. YES defense IS important, but let's not forget we(in the worst case scenario) lift only out of desperation and not WLL.
So all in all, you won't give your offence away if you're always deceptive and good at the net and you can be offensive. I don't mean to say to just ignore defense(because we have to lift at least some times to keep the other player guessing). If you work 100% on your defense, then work 120% on the net play and deceptions

I think you should create a video on overhead technique as your last one is pretty old.

Super Video!

You are talking with the serve situation about the grip change position, can you elobarate a bit more on this/ make it more specific where this location is?

Hi, do you have any push/lifting tutorial? I wanna get a good push/lift in my skill sets because I don't like playing the net which is why I need to have a good push/lift.

Tobias, as a former 200th ranked men singles player in 2015 and being retired for quite a few years now, how confident are you that you'll be able to beat the likes of An Se Young or Pusarla Shindu in a singles match as you are today?
