One example, Office Space.
It did horrible at the theaters. I watched it at a theater when it came out. Thought it was a great movie, but the theater was near empty. It's pretty well liked by anyone who's seen it, and yet it made crap for money.
I can tell you that it came out at the same time that some other blockbuster movies came out and this could have been the downfall, but not much more than that

Luck iss 1st time unknown director and write with unknown actors hits the big time and his work elicits an award winning reception. Failure is when all those involved under over esteem themselves and over estimate their star power. Good people, even great ones are subject to fail on occasion.
