The Virgin: The Etymological Mythology of Shakti and Shiva

The root meaning of the word virgin is 'whole unto herself'. Joseph Campbell explores the higher meaning of this and how Shakti can create the world through sexual union with Shiva and yet remain a virgin. It is to do with the question of the depth psychology meaning of the story. This is the divine masculine and the divine feminine coming together. It is love not as compensation not as filling a lack (as in Aristophanes' account in Plato's Symposium) but as a matter of the cup overfloweth.

I love this so much. One of the first things I do with words is look up the etymology, but I have never done this with the word "virgin". And wow! I could say a lot more, but instead how about just: everything you just said! 🙌

I’m a massive fan of all your content and find it great to have these shorter form videos as well as the longer ones. Fellow Dub? Jmx
