The change in Santa's appearance is often credited to the Coca-Cola company, which commissioned artist Haddon Sundblom to create a series of Santa paintings in the 1930s. Sundblom portrayed Santa Claus as a jovial, Rubenesque man in a red suit, which became an iconic image recognized around the world. Although Coca-Cola contributed to the popularization of this image, it is not the creator of Santa's red suit. Already earlier, in the 19th century, Thomas Nast, an American cartoonist, depicted Santa Claus wearing red clothes⁴.

Coca-Cola used the image of Santa in a red suit in its marketing campaign to remind people that their drink is suitable for all seasons, not just summer. This campaign began in 1922 with the slogan "Thirst knows no season"¹.
