Sydney's Sketchbook - Bouncy Cartoon Characters

It's sad that so many people in the comments have completely missed the point of these sketchbook videos. These are the students personal sketchbooks. They are practice. Occasionally the will have assignments in them but more often than not they are the student doing what they like for fun and with the only mandate that they keep a sketchbook and do work in it, which is how you improve as an artist, by doing something everyday. Sure they are influenced by the pop culture, some more heavily and noticeably than others. Show me one artist who isn't. The important thing to remember is that they are students. they are still learning and growing as artists and of course Matt is encouraging them. What the hell is he going to do? Rip them apart? He is doing his job as a teacher. Fostering a love for art and steering them anyway he can with whatever techniques work. Not all of them are going to jump on the old ways of doing things or learning from the old masters and he knows that, so he is positive and encouraging and genuinely interested and excited in his students work, which to me is the sign of a good teacher. FYI, I taught art for 11 years before having to retire for medical reason so I am not just talking out of my ass here.

This is one of my favorite sketchbooks on this channel. I don't think she is just copying Cartoon Network. Most of these are original characters.

I just wanted to apologize for my negative comment I made a few months ago, I've grown alot as a person I was in a bad mindset at the time and I realize my negative "critic" was unnecessary and this person has every right to draw how they want to draw and they are very lovely and I feel terrible for even commenting in a way that can hurt this person's feelings. Please everyone be mindful when you comment on these videos, it can really hurt people's feelings and motivation. This person has wonderful art and I hope they continue on the great amazing work they are doing!!

I love the style. I have a couple small critiques though. Because of the style and the fact the a large part is b/w, it can get a little hard to tell characters apart. Like, I can't always tell if a character is the same one from earlier in the book, or if it's new. The other thing I notice is the lack of tone and perspective. I notice it, because it looks a lot like how I draw. Flat character outlines. They look well drawn, but definitely would benefit from a bit of tone and contrast to break up shapes, as well as just drawing the characters from different angles and stuff. Maybe even throwing in some exaggerated perspective and forshortening just to keep things interesting.

Still, great work though.
