Just buy what you like and enjoy. That’s it.

Watches are toys to enjoy!! NOT investments. However, everybody loves to say they won buying their watches. I AM surprised about how prices increased of some of my watches. The 1680 Submariner bought by my dad for 507 US $ at the local AD in 1976 is now far away from that price. (30 times or more?)
The Omega Flightmaster bought for less than 1k is now ay least 3.5k.
Even the Phoibos watches retail preowned for more than SRP.
I DO NOT BUY WATCHES AS INVESTMENTS! I enjoy the toys....😎🤔

It's a shame now in watch collecting that the issue of resale value is present. For the most part if its a big concern then really you can't afford the watch, I say do yourself a favour and buy a less expensive watch and concern yourself with more inportant things in life.

Couple of years ago i purchased an Omega 2254.50 and a 2531.80. I do not think i will take a huge hit in years to come

Tag Heuer should be on this list. I lost about 40% of value in two months on a new, and somewhat unique Aquaracer.

There’s just something I like about Bell & Ross. Bad resell, plain movements, probably overpriced, but they’re still my favourite

I see it the other way around, I prefer watches that loose a lot of money because I don't buy them new.. And I don't really care about their price after I bought them, because I just can't sell them. I completely agree on the: "only buy what you really like".

But on the other hand it doesn't hurt to do some research, you never know that you could have financial troubles later in life. In that situation I would not want to only have Frederique Constant and Bell&Ross watches in my drawer.. I do have some Baume & Mercier watches :D

If you cant afford a Rolex or Patek, then maybe look at Sinn. Sinn seems to hold it's value pretty good overrall. That is if value retention is a determining factor.

Not always about money as people should buy what they like; however, certainly no one wants to lose a ton of money when they don’t have too. That’s why you have to buy used or grey a big portion of the time. To give the shout out to del ray watch a lot of their prices are really good compared to new or even used in other places. I just bought a Omega Seamaster 300m for 3.9k on Jomashop hopefully I can retain a lot of that value vs the 4.9k new but I have no plans to sell anyway. I think I’ll have this watch for a very long time

I got a BR 03-92 preowned, in near mint condition for a great discount. They are what they are, but I love the look.

Hey John good to see you again.

Thanks for these tips.

Finally a fair assessment of H Mosser. The amount of online presence they have i assumed its a bubble that will burst even before it flies. :D .. The watch marketed as "Rare" and hailed by watch dealers as 'grail watch' watch is super easily available even the limited editions, that shows the value it would have in pre owned market.

I'd add Breguet, Vacheron, and Zenith to the list (at least for UK). Not the very worst depreciators, but pretty bad. Basically, what we're saying is that new watches have an obscene retail mark up and the market has become very fashion driven. Utterly divorced from quality. The market is now very polarised between Asia, E Europe/S America and W Europe/US (or mature vs emerging markets). Just take time with your purchase and keep your watches! Certainly don't buy to sell.

I been in this hobby for 20 years buying high horology pieces. I always purchase pre owned. Guess what guys... it nothing new, watches are not an investment, it's a expensive hobby or toy. You always lose money on watches. Its only because demand these days in rolexes are higher than supply, that's why they are making over retail. When the demand drops and the hype dies down then you might be holding onto something that is below retail. Wasnt long ago when you could walk into a AD and get a discount of on gold Rolex. I picked up a PP nautilus waiting only a month only 5 years ago. Now you cant even get on the list on these

The pre owned has always been my do to, most purchased at more than 30%, except for my Rolex Submariner two-tone bluesy with ceramic bezel. Paid just under retail.

I bought a watch not for sell it.
I bought my watches to wear them, not for sale.
Sorry if I was wrong.

John awesome job from u to be honest by telling to truth & not trying to direct traffic to purchase pre own. What u said I couldn't agreed more, , , apart from Rolex (most models), some AP, PP, F0J & some independents timepieces will hold or appreciated, , , the whole lots of it will drop in value the moment u step out of AD. For me when I brought a timepiece be it new or I dont really bother about it resale as I'm wearing it to please myself. But it make load of sense to get pre-owned.

Mine isn’t for sale and it wasn’t bought as an investment but my blue dial 39mm Rolex OP has gone up about 30% in value. I thought quite surprising for an entry level watch.

My longines hydroconquest lost 40% value when I sold it, I paid 10% off retail for it. That was a relatively inexpensive way to learn to be very careful and buy pre-owned. Could been much worse!
