Protesters call for end of mass incarceration after latest Rikers death

The group rallied outside Gov. Kathy Hochul's office in Manhattan demanding an end to what they call inhumane conditions on the island. CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reports.

It's called prison. It's not suppose to be a nice place to live. I know cause I was an inmate. It made me think "hey do I really want to be in a place like this" HELL NO. .. don't commit crime and you won't go to jail.

You can make an argument for
improving conditions in prisons
but the idea that you can release
violent, depraved, individuals back
into Society is ridiculous and very
dangerous.
Why is all the sympathy for the criminals? What about their victims?
They can't even live peacefully with
guards monitoring their behavior.
It's highly irresponsible to let them
loose in Society and think they're
not gonna harm innocent people.
I wonder how all these Liberal
demonstrators would feel if they
or someone they loved were a
victim of one of these characters.
Prisons are a necessary evil in the
World because there are people
who are Evil and who don't hesitate
to prey on the weak and vulnerable.
By all means improve conditions in
prisons; but by no means just let
all the prisoners return to Society.
That just doesn't make any sense
and it will make the world a very
dangerous place to live in.

Tell your family members to stop commiting crimes and you won't have an issue. Talk about first world problems, our jails aren't nice enough so release all the criminals until they can have lavish accomodations with hi speed wifi, 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and top tier medical insurance. That's definitely what I want my tax money to go to. These people are delusional.

Although the jails do need upgrades...if all of you inmates would've stayed home(violent ones, rapists)you wouldn't have to worry about that shi. And this is your punishment. Stay home and you wouldn't be complaining.👮

It's completely illogical to advocate for replacing one problem with another problem. Violent crime is a problem, and violent criminals should absolutely not be allowed to roam freely so they can continue terrorizing everyone around them. Poor prison conditions is another problem, but the solution isn't to set violent criminals free. My gosh, how utterly insane are some folks?!

Rikers Island needs to be staffed properly & security procedures must be followed by wardens & C.O.'s to keep everyone in these facilities as safe as possible. Inmates walking around freely in jail is despicable & Commissioner/Mayor Adams should not tolerate it

Saying all inmates should be released is stupid & thoughtless. Those older demonstrators are right to want inmates with learning, mental or physical disabilities to get a fair trial but the buck stops there.

Dear family members and protesters,
Let’s me get this straight, you’re concerned about the safety of your animalistic family member because they’re locked up with other animals. Gotcha.
