If baptism washes away sin, why was Christ baptized? Was he a sinner? (Matthew 3:16-17)

There's a common belief in Christianity that the practice or tradition of baptism washes away our sins. However, it's also common knowledge in Christianity that Christ was sinless. If that's the case, why was he baptized?
