This piece is a flute, clarinet, violin, and cello quartet by Sarah Sturdevant.
It was premiered by Hub New Music on May 1, 2023 at Occidental College.

Lone Cowboy tells the story of a man riding a horse through the desert in search of his purpose. The piece is a suite with six sections depicting different experiences the cowboy faces on his journey. The piece opens with the tired cowboy riding into the sunset, ending another lonely day. The piece shift to a lively and exciting tune as the cowboy rides into a town the next day, causing mischief as he explores the many businesses. The fun and games come to a halt when he falls madly in love with a girl he meets in town. They spend all day together and just when he thinks he’s found his life’s purpose to care for and love her, he meets the Man in Black, who will kill any man who comes near her, already having claimed her as his own. The cowboy is too cowardly to duel the Man in Black and chooses to ride away on his horse, galloping away as fast as he can. In the end, the cowboy is left where he began, riding into the sunset on his horse, his only companion.
