How to cultivate tranquility: the meditation “hack” that changed my practice

This video explores a simple yet powerful meditation “hack” to cultivate tranquility in your practice and life. Cultivating tranquility creates a positive feedback loop, it feels good so you get more focused into the practice and then it feels even better... and so on.

This practice is perfect for beginner but can enhance any meditation practice, and is a great strategy for dealing with stress or anxiety. It's a form of metta or loving-kindness practice, but can be combined with various other styles of practices, like focusing on the breath, or open awareness, or even an inquiry style of practice.

This strategy is a foundational aspect of Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation (TWIM). You can learn more about TWIM here:

Thank you for honoring the deep grief and uncertainty I seem to be drowning in these days. Although I resisted it at first, I gave it a chance and have since found that "smiling" is powerful in it's simplicity. It's not meant to sugarcoat feelings at all - rather, it's a manual act of self compassion we can practice.

Honestly, when I first started practicing this, it was the last thing I wanted to do. But I gave it a chance. That's all we need to do here. Just give it a chance. Be gentle with it. The very act of engaging your cheek muscles in the act of smiling sends a message of very much needed benevolence to the brain.

I found this to be so simple and easy to do. This might be something to try next time I'm waiting in line. Thank you.

Hello, happy to see people recommending TWIM. TWIM is what worked for me (i.e. I'm convinced I just need to continue down the path). There's a great book (and even free PDF) called "The Path to Nibbana" that describes it in detail.

I’m a big fan of Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation (TWIM), especially as taught by Delson Armstrong. It’s what got me really interested in the jhanas.

I felt the smile not on my face, but inside my head and it made my chest and hands very light. I'm new to this and not good at getting deep into it, yet, but I am going to add this into my meditations. Thank you.
