Everyone alive has ancestors that were slaves and others that were slavers. Everyone shares blood with people from the past who were genocidal and who were victims of genocide. To say one race has a monopoly on slavery is to admit to knowing nothing of history. The truth is that we are all human. We are all capable of greatness and depravity.

Another lesson that should be learned from slavic/eastern Europe is that many of those countries were colonized, occupied, enslaved, destroyed etc. many times in their history (eg Poland - last time was not long ago). And yet Eastern Europeans rebuilt their countries with hard work. Im fed up with people that prefer complaining about colonisations or slavery that happened to their ancestors hundreds of years ago instead of dealing with current corruption in their comunities and misery caused daily by their own.

I can't think of any civilization that wasn't enslaved at some point in history. Today in America this seems like forbidden knowledge, im glad you guys are putting this out there.

Serbia was among first countries that banned slavery, the 1835 constitution had a rule:
Any slave that put a step inside territory of Serbia immediately become a free man.

This rule is taken from "Code of Tsar Dusan" from back in 1335/1349 when he ruled the Serbian Kingdom in the middle age!

Our school system here in America has done a terrible job when it comes to teaching "history".
All they've successfully accomplished is to create tension between people when none needed to exist.

Thanks for the history lessons. I learned something super interesting recently that the French took Polish people to Haiti. There are people in Haiti with Polish ancestry. Life used to be really rough for the majority of people. Human trafficking is still happening today under our noses and it needs to stop.

My random fact on slavery. Many of you will have heard of the book Robinson Crusoe. This was based on the real life Alexander Selkirk, who was dumped on a remote island after trying (and failing) to get the rest of the crew to mutiny over the poor state of the ship. He was there for 4 years before being rescued. However, around 2 years in, a Spanish ship came into view and a small boat came on shore. Instead of running to meet the boat, Selkirk hid in the centre of the island. The boat he mutinied on did sink, those that didn't drown were picked up by a Spanish ship and what Selkirk feared would happen to him, happened to the remaining crew. They ended up as slaves in a Bolivian silver mine, an horrific fate.

I do genealogy and was watching a few years ago a show called finding your roots. This African American family found out that there family were slave owners in the south. That was never taught to me in school.

I'm Croatian, Slavic I guess, but we don't really see our history like this. :/ It's kind of weird when foreigners think of my people as something we don't see ourselves as. Slavery was very common before, all around the world. But I guess the difference is we don't see ourselves as former slaves. We're just Croatians. I believe that applies to all Slavic countries.

I find it amazing how few people know about the Irish slaves that rich yankees owned. They called it indentured servitude so yankees could feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. Owning someone and holding them captive is slavery no matter how you word it. When my grandfather was 7 years old in 1896, a Jewish family helped him escape and snuggled him to the Appalachians in NC. He was raised by friends of theirs. I'm 62 now. My grandfather came to the south via the Underground Railroad running in reverse 😂

It was NEVER about color or even region. It was about who was weaker!

Slavic nations to this day use the same name for themselves: Slaven, Slovan, Slavjan... as it was mentioned in the video it most likely means "the word' and _Slovans_ or _Slavjans_ means "people of the word". Proof of that is the name Slavic peoples to this day use for one who is German: Nijemac, Nemac, Niemec. (written in English it is Niematz)
It's the same word with variations and it literally means - mute.
For ancient Slavs, their Germanic neighbors were people which didn't use the "slovo" (Slavic language) so they were marked as mutes and remain called so almost 2000 years later.

After a 1000 years of suffering we Slavs still can't get along and allow others to exploit us.

In the south of Germany we still say "Servus" to greet each other or to say goodbye. It basically means "I'm at your service"

Not sure if you have already looked into this topic (this is the first video I've seen of yours), but the Arab slave trade of both Africans and Europeans is probably the most brutal in history. This video touches on it briefly, but not in detail. Anyway, kudos to you both for keeping your minds open to new knowledge.

I'm 53 years old American of Slavic heritage. I remember seeing my great aunt crying at the kitchen table with PTSD remembering her years as a slave. Was a kid then. Slavery ended in her country in 1918 in her country. So I actually saw a real ancestor who was an actual slave in my lifetime.

What you guys missed out on this was not that it's when slavery began but when massive Slave Trade began. Which later spiraled the Arab Slave Trade then the Atlantic Slave trade... And it's where the English word slave derives from for in that region the Slaves we're nomads and crusaders and quite often found themself on the wrong end of the slave trade.

Just about every race of people have been slaves. Slavery is not about race but rather classism. Unfortunately when certain people are in power they use other people as slaves. A lot of people think slavery is about race but that's just not the case.
