So trueee. I had that one moment when my friends asked me to read what's written on the pen and I told them it's Chinese not Japanese or Korean

My father still cannot believe I can "read those signs"...

This is relatable when my friends and my sibling say "Hey see over there it is written in Korean and you know Korean what does it say?" and I say "It is in Japanese or Chinese" people actually confuse Korean with Chinese and Japanese.

Lol one time my Vietnamese coworker and I went to a pho place while on a work trip and he ordered in Vietnamese (as usual) and then about 10 min later while we were eating he put his head in his hands, so embarrassed, and said "omg I can hear them talking in the back and they're Chinese, not Vietnamese."

FR! You know what this happened with me once😭
Like i was in a market area (there is one i went at that time), its like korean market area in my country. So, I went there after persuading my parents. When i was there, as it was a korean market area, there were manyy koreans (who came to travel ofc), so they were talking to each other in korean. My mom asked me like, "you're learning Korean right? Do you understand what they're saying?"
Me be like: ... yehhhh some wordss.. 😭😭😭

Me but with Japanese. I'm now learning Mandarin Chinese, and eventually Korean, out of spite.

I admit, before I started studying Korean, I couldn’t tell the difference either, but after just one day of looking at hangeul the difference became really clear. I still sometimes mix up Japanese and Chinese, but I know that Chinese normally has more complex characters. I’m impressed when a native English speaker learns Chinese because it’s so overwhelming to me.

Yep. Was my dad for sure. I don’t understand how people can’t hear the difference or see the difference in the text. I also don’t understand how people cannot differentiate between different Asian ethnicities (of which there are many). I always remember people in the 90’s saying Chinese greetings to anyone Asian and me being like “Omg they’re Japanese!” Which was usually followed by the even more ignorant, “So, what’s the difference?!” This was how I felt since a kid, long before learning other languages or traveling to Asia. Sad that maybe ignorance blurs your vision and hearing. 😮

That's true! Now I completely understand where are Korean, Japanese, and Chinese people just by listening to them))

I've been introduced to random strangers at work and been told to speak to them because they are Korean... they are but don't speak ANY Korean 😶
