Sonarworks SoundID Reference — Corrective EQ for video editors and mixers

In this week’s episode, we look at Sonarworks SoundID Reference. This is a bundle including a calibrated measurement microphone plus an app you run on your Mac or PC. The app guides you through the process of making nearly 40 measurements of sound playing back through your speakers or monitors in your mixing room. From those measurements, it makes an EQ curve to tune the output of your monitors so that you get balanced and focused playback of your mixes. Let’s take a closer look and see whether it makes a difference and is worth the $299 USD.

Amazing, thank you Curtis. This was most helpful! I’ve treated my room and will pick this up as the icing on the cake

you can also get good results by playing back pink noise in left channel against individual frequency bands in right channel at one at a time and match the apparent volume.

SoundID reference can fix your frequency response but it can't replace sound treatment regarding reverb. My approach was to minimize reverb and then use SoundID to fix the frequency response :)

Thanks for suggesting a cheaper alternative for those of us who cannot afford the sensible solution. I for one have to rely on instruments correcting for me. I am nerve deaf in my right ear & have severly restricted frequency range in the left.
So thank-you again

Can you measure the room with this set also? I am planning to do some acoustic treatment and was looking at the behringer mic in addition with the REW -->> this is capable of showing me the freq. range of my room. Does the Sonarworks software work in a similar regard, except from what you have shown us in your video?

Great video Curtis, went ahead and bought it since I've been looking for a simple solution for this. Question: in the video you mentioned the desktop app for playback. Given that I prefer simplicity, and an extra app is always kind of annoying, do you know if standard desktop audio interfaces (focusrite, UAD, symphony) can have the EQ curve applied during the output? I swear the apollo twin X I had could do this, but I'm not seeing any options with the symphony.

Hi Curtis thanks God I find your channel, I desperately need help .I’ve recently shot my first short film and we just find out later that the sound guy messed up. The dialogues are low and when trying to increase the volume, it’s making noise. Now I can’t re-record some of the actors left town already, how can you assist 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

There's a ferrite core/bead at the interface end of the mic cable -- is this needed for your particular studio setup or do you recommend doing this generally?

listening through earbuds, before was too much base, an very muddy in the mids, after was far better, have you come across drivers glue on sound ceiling panels ! 😮 impressive sound hanging from two wires

Several months ago a neighbor caused a fire which made our apartment building uninhabitable. I now live in a different building with a lot of noise everywhere with no hope of using a system of speakers. Thank goodness for my Sennheiser HD 280 pro headphones.

So yes, it would be interesting what presets they might have for various headphones.

Just curious, if you do another measurment after initial measurement is done and EQ is applied, does it shows flat curve?

Hello Curits. I am a person who has watched a lot of your videos. Almost when I refer to any microphone model, I type your name after the keyword.
(My English is not very good, so I am using Google translate to try to get your advice, may not be grammatically correct. Please be patient)
I'm looking for a microphe for indie filmmaking, and I'm on my own in the run and shoot style, paired with my Sony A7Siii. And for months, I couldn't find a reliable option.
Can you give me advice on the quality of the Zoom F1 Audio Field Recorder combined with the shotgun?
- Is it good to make run and shoot movies? (noisy, natural environment)
- When connecting to the camera, is the sound quality reduced compared to when recording independently?
- How does it sound compared to microphones with XLR ports, such as the Sennheiser MKE600?
Your feedback is really important to me, if possible, give me some time. Thank you very much :D

Which acoustic panels and bass traps do you use? Did you make them yourself? If so, which insulation did you use?

Interested in headphones portion of the software. I assume it helps headphones emulate the sound of studio monitors?

The science behind it and the original purpose is brilliant, but when you hear the samples there’s not much difference honestly and it’s about 300$ for things you can intuit by yourself
