~ Here the band should be labeled 'charlie musslewhite's southside band' with guitarist harvey mandel on blistering form! here on that debut album the line-up was : harvey mandel/bob anderson/fred below jr/barry goldberg & charlie musslewhite vocals-harmonica...but here i'll include a write up from another track we have up as i dont think i can add more...a truely amazing bluesman who's harmonica work is almost unlimited....he left his native mississippi home for chicago and there made a name for himself around the many blues clubs but '67 saw him move to san francisco after his '67 album 'standback!' for vanguard records was a big turntable hit around the city...he performed over the years as 'charlie musselwhites south side band/charlie musselwhite & charlie musselwhite's blues band' this track infact was recorded for that vanguard debut in a short verson of around 4 mins but for some reason he chose to revisit the tune (written by jazz pianist duke pearson) on his last album for vanguard 'tennesse woman' '69...backed by : carl severeid/lance dickerson/tim kaihatsu-guitar/skip rose/fred roulette with larry welker on guitar...he certainly stretched out the tune on this 'live' take in the studio as he would on live dates...around san francisco he seemed a permanent fixture playing venues such as 'the fillmore/the carousel/the matrix/the old cheese factory/the big beat in palo alto/keystone korner/freeborn hall in davis/the avalon etc etc...the tune was originally recorded by donald byrd on his 'a new perspective' album 'blue note' records 1963 and features a beautiful chorus of female voices on the intro much as another great 'psychedelic' version by harvey mandel did on his 'philips records' album 'cristo redentor' 1968...beautiful music indeed...so enjoy this long workout jam of the tune and imagine your back at the avalon reveling in the incense filled vibes of the evening...
