Are you making these 3 mistakes?
This tutorial will help you Speak English Clearly
There are 3 common mistakes that learners of English make when they pronounce the ‘ng’ sound (/ŋ/ sound) in English.
These mistakes can occur even if you’re putting your tongue in the correct position. The problem is that if you make any of these mistakes, they will leave you sounding unprofessional in English.
In last week's English Pronunciation tutorial, I showed you how to make the ‘ng’ sound in English, and how it compares to the n sound. The /ŋ/ sound and the /n/ sound are 2 sounds that are commonly confused in English and it can be hard to tell the difference between them if you don’t know the correct tongue position. Once you know the right tongue position, with a bit of practice you can learn the /ŋ/ sound quite easily. I highly recommend that you watch this tutorial if you haven’t done so already which you can do by clicking here:
Once you know the difference between both the n and the /ŋ/ sound and can put your tongue into the correct position, then it’s important to be aware of these 3 mistakes, which you may well be making.
The mistake that a lot of people make when making this sound is that they don’t stop airflow before moving the tongue to the next position. The result is that as airflow continues and the tongue moves position, an unnecessary sound is made. This sound is usually one of the following sounds: /k/, /g/, or a ‘lateral approximant stye’ /ŋ/.
As soon as airflow stops before the tongue moves position, this problem goes away. In this tutorial, I show you what happens in my mouth when I correctly make the /ŋ/ sound, and then I show you what happened in my mouth when I make all 3 of the mistakes so you can see the mistakes in action for yourself.
I then give you a simple 3 step process for fully integrating the correct pronunciation of the /ŋ/ sound into your English speech, and if you follow the 3 steps in the right order, you should never struggle with this sound again.
This is a highly practical English Pronunciation tutorial that you can use for immediate improvements in your English speaking.
