I think Nigo x Nike is a decent collab but the execution is boring. The shoe is fine, but it's really awkward when bape is being sued for essentially what Nigo did with bape, and then they turn around and make a shoe that is vaguely a bapesta with patent leather.

Originally I didn’t like them but the factors that got me were the colors, nostalgic bape patent leather, Gundam/Voltron anime style marketing along with the Air Force evolved model. White Air Forces were the shoes that made me a sneakerhead when I was a kid so it’s only right. I love Nigo, Human Made, CPFM Air Forces, their unorthodox approach and Marvel Bapestas because I grew up playing Marvel Superheroes & Capcom 🆚

I think you articulated it quite well. I was excited by the anime and what they looked like, but when seeing them, I thought I was on the wrong image. Simple.

I would love to hear about more independent/small-mid brands in Japan or visiting Japan. Lots of designers are coming in and out of Japan and I have heard many different 'first time' views of what Japanese Fashion is like before getting here and seeing.
