440 WHP Nissan Skyline R33 GTR | The Unloved JDM Icon

Today Marcus is behind the wheel of the unloved JDM icon of the 90's: The Nissan Skyline R33 GTR. In this review Marcus finally completes his experience with the GTR trilogy. R32 GTR, R33 GTR, and R34 GTR. This example is a 1995 V-Spec in midnight purple which happens to be the most sought after engine/colour combination in the Skyline world. With a twin-turbo RB26 DETT under the hood putting down 440hp down to all 4 wheels, this is an extremely capable sports car that's ready and willing to take on even the best sports cars of 2016. I might be blind, but to me, the R33 looks SO MUCH BETTER than the R34...
Ok the front of the R34 is sexy, but the rear? R33 is much better.
I'd love to own any GTR, but the R33 is easly my favorite, and that example is almost spot on.

You get that tiny bit of tail slide because the R33 GTR is not AWD untill the system feels like it needs to be. In normal everyday driving the GTR is just RWD. Once it feels the rear end is losing grip, the front diff starts helping out too. A little fun fact :P

The R33 GT-R is extremely similar to the R34 GT-R in many ways because the R34 was developed on the R33 chassis. Nissans did not strive to make the R34 faster than the R33 because it had already proved to be the first mass production sports car to lap the Nürburgring in under 8 minutes. They aimed to make the car more appealing to people who thought the R33 was too big (even though it's faster and better than the R32 in every objective way aside from being slightly heavier) and to make the R34 easier to drive fast. The R33 is actually lighter than the R34 though it has a longer wheelbase. They utilize the exact same suspension/drivetrain with the exception of updated differentials and a better Getrag transmission. Similarities between the two are further proven by similar chassis mounting for things that were not even initially utilized on the R33. One notable example of this is the mounts for the R34 V-Spec rear diffuser on the R33 that serve no purpose but can used for the same purpose. The same mounts for racing harnesses in the cabin of the R33 under the rear seats are also present in the R34. The R34 had a plastic cam gear cover instead of a metal one on the R32/R33, and aside from that the R33 motor 96-98 were the same aside from the turbos. The big differences are the aesthetics externally, the interior, and the transmission.
