Fixing Parking Brakes | Subaru Outback | Man About Home

The rear wheel bearings on the 2009 Subaru Outback were howling, the duct covers on the rear Brake Back Plates were totally rotted away, and the brake pads needed to be replaced in time for inspection. I also replaced the rear drive axles, because they were on the edge. It made sense to do all this work at the same time, and I even renued the parking brake shoes and hardware.

So I used this opportunity to record a demonstration of how parking brakes are disassembled, reassembled with new parts, and adjusted.

Thank you for watching!

thanks for filming the new stuff being assembled on the bench, it gives you a much better view of where the parts are touching and stuff. very educational

Randomly found this video. Great video thank you for the detailed explanation. Gotta do my parking brakes on my 2014 outback with the backing plates. Dam rust ate the plaster and rear wheel bearings are shot same with brakes 😂

Thanks for making this video! I'm trying to find the complete kit of backer plates, various parts and brake shoes that you acquired but am not finding it online. Could you please tell us where you got it, or even better, provide a link? Thanks!

Great video
I am tacking the exact same job with new backing plate, hubs, and hardware.
Is it possible for me to disconnect cable and then take off backing plate with hardware attached (since I am replacing everything)?

Also, can I bench assemble everything and then install with brakes installed on backing plate?
Seems like the cable attachment might prevent being able to do this.

any tips for removing the cable from the backing plate? I know there's a clip that comes off, but do you also need to spread those tabs/ears on the backing plate to pull the cable out? mine is very rusty, could probably use a new backing plate but I'm worried I won't be able to get the hub off
