Why Wet Belts Suck!

Ford have recently been using wet belts on their 2.0l engines and it’s cause a huge problem in warranty issues. (but they are not the only manufacturer to use wet belts, they are all at it)

Ford themselves have been using the wrong brand oil, (not viscosity) which causes the rubber belt to degrade, block the oil pick up pipe in the sump & starve the top of the engine of oil.

Which in turn causes the valves to bend (due to increased temperature) and the engine to blow..

Common early signs of wet belt failure include. A stiff brake pedal, tappy engine & presence of rubber in the oil when changing it.

This is why Japanese car manufacturers know their stuff and focus on reliability and don’t fix something that isn’t broken.

whoever invented the wet belt system needs to be in hall of shame.

New cars were built to fail….the manufacturers did this on purpose

Doesn’t have to be the wrong oil, all oil will degrade a wet bet

Its not the oil brand, all oil brands will degrade the rubber at the same rate, the biggest issue is the unburnt fuel that get mixed with the oil every now and then, after a while the concentration of fuel in the oil is high enough that it will degrade the rubber of the belt alarmingly fast.

But, even if the rubber did not degrade when wet by the oil, parts of that rubber come of the belt no matter what during its lifetime, those particles and pieces get cycled though the filtration system of the oil risking potential failure of the engine even in the best case scenario for the lifetime of use from the belt.

Putting the timing belts on the same oil as the engine is probably the dumbest idea ever had in automotive history, specially when you consider at that point we already had 100+ years of understanding engines, oils and rubbers.

It's not a mistake
It's by DESIGN
It's about Driving Profit
At your expense

The grade and make of oil is the manufacturer's excuse to deflect responsibility onto the owner. It's going to degrade in any oil.

My cousins Ford Transit Custom bought new done 56k miles and wet belt snapped…it is supposed to last 80k….
Getting it fixed by Ford under warranty….
Best part is that Ford tried to get out of fixing it saying wrong type of oil was used at the service until my cousin showed them the service book that had 5 ( typo) service stamps in it from Ford Main dealer service…. 😀

Hey guys, our dry timing belt setups are lasting far beyond recommended service intervals...what do we do?
"We can put the belt in the engine and bath it in oil, it'll fail at 101, 000 miles and we put a 100, 000 mile warranty on it."
Brilliant. Pints all around.

Blows my mind that ford sells trucks for $50k, $60k, $70k and still have them break down. All that money obviously doesn't go towards quality or manufacturing....

I absolutely agree with you!. I have 2012 Isuzu D'max now have 263k miles on it and never had any single problems.

Over 35yrs ago i was taught if your ever doing any work on a car and you see the timing belt with oil on it from rocker cover, camshaft oil seal or crankshaft oil seal failure recommend to the customer to get it changed because it's contaminated and will degrade the belt and premature failure, then manufacturers design a belt to run in oil but they still can't get it right 😂

Toyota is awesome too. Timing should either by DRY belts or wet chain, NO WET BELTS!

I thought that rubber belts were mainly to make the engine more quiet and smooth. If that’s true, it’s pretty pointless on a lumpy diesel engine. I’ve always been a fan or gears and chains over belts. Great video 👍

Might want to correct the fact that the 4JJ3 made by ISUZU really has nothing to do with Japan and is pretty well made and designed in Thailand for SEA & a handful of Euro markets (also including S.A).

Worst part, they change it back to chains as stated in their brochure, BUT they still use the wet belt for the oil pump (isn't required to be mentioned in their brochure/specs).

And the added benefit for Ford is that they get to deny the warranty claim.

I can’t understand why anyone thought this would be a good idea, a rubber belt in ANY oil will deteriorate in no time, it can only be a money making scheme..
I always had transits but have now bought Iveco

Chains are also no good these days. A flimsy pretentioner is used to make sure engine goes kaput

Got a 2011 isuzu dmax, it's got 380, 00km and still going strong. Love it.

The 2L rangers are wet belts, the 3L V6 is a dry belt.
