UK Premiere
Doc'n Roll Film Festival 9th edition - Barbican
Dir. Eliane Henri , 2022, USA, 107 min
A vérité-style documentary, chronicling the final year of jazz trumpet legend Roy Hargrove’s life. We follow Roy as he embarks on what would be his final European summer tour as luminaries including Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Questlove, Sonny Rollins and Yasiin Bey pay tribute to his artistry, impact and legacy. Filmed in Paris, Sète, Vienna, Perugia, Sorrento, Marseille, Los Angeles, Dallas and New York, HARGROVE captures stunning live performances by its subject.
In an epic love letter from first-time director Eliane Henri, leading voices in jazz attest to Roy’s status as a musical prophet, reflect on the magic of his music and go beyond Roy’s personal story to reflect on what it means to be an artist, particularly in the American context. It explores questions of race and exploitation in the music industry as well as the multi-dimensional layers of Black music perspectives, with contributions from some of the most revered voices in Black music today. A mystical journey through the end of Hargrove’s time on earth, this film is also a master class by the artist himself, cementing his role as mentor and teacher to forthcoming generations of young musicians.
