LIVE: Israel launches airstrike on Beirut, Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes killed 274 people in Lebanon, including 21 children and 39 women, after they battered Hezbollah positions on Monday, the health ministry said, in the bloodiest day yet of a campaign to end rocket fire by the Iran-backed militia.

The airstrikes hammered southern Lebanon and the central Beqaa valley throughout the day. Israel’s military urged civilians to evacuate areas used by Hezbollah in phone calls that played recorded messages.

Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defence minister, said the military would deepen its campaign. So far, its air force has conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon, the Beqaa valley and the city of Sidon.

I can see it is difficult for Israel however I am not convinced that this current strategy will solve their problem. There will always be survivors of Hezbollah who at some point, feel they have the right to attack Israel again. Furthermore, whilst the Palestinians could not defend themselves when they were attact, I wonder what the Lebanese think of being attacked by Israel all be it with specific targets. Would we be happy if a country (nameless) would target people in our country in this way? I dont thinkhink so. Does this mean that we should apply the same rules to Israel as we do to Russia?
