Arguments are the lifeblood of all functions and formulas in excel. They are defined as what are required to make a formula work, and what you can add to make a formula work better. After you type the first open parentheses of a function the arguments will appear below the function, with the argument that you are filling in bolded. Some functions, such as VLOOKUP have arguments that are in brackets. These arguments are not required to make the function work, but are great for helping it work better. Also, if you want the arguments that a function requires to show up in plain text, type CTRL+ALT+A after typing the first open parentheses of a function.
