How to Become a CPA in the US

To become a licensed CPA, you need to do three things:
1. Meet the requirements to sit for the CPA exam
2. Pass the CPA exam
3. Meet the licensing requirements for the state in which you plan to practice

The requirements to sit for the CPA exam and the requirements to obtain a CPA license are different for each jurisdiction.

There are 55 jurisdictions in the U.S., including:
• The 50 U.S. states
• Washington, D.C.
• Puerto Rico
• Guam
• The U.S. Virgin Islands
• The Northern Mariana Islands

It’s important that you check the requirements for your jurisdiction.

What an extraordinary list of red tape, and with every state having its own version you are locked into your state and can't move about freely to greener pastures. No wonder CPAs often feel so overworked and can't find sufficient replacements.
