Is Biden/Harris Doing Enough To Pass Voting Rights? Senate GOP Block John Lewis Voting Rights Bill

Democrats don't seem to understand that voting rights protection legislation is a top priority for African Americans and is going to be critically important to the 2022 and 2024 elections.

Once again, Republicans blocked the Senate from beginning a debate on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act with a filibuster.

The voting rights law, named for the late civil rights leader and Democratic congressman from Georgia, would reauthorize key sections of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 that were gutted in decisions by the Supreme Court's conservatives in 2013 and 2020. The bill also contains elements of the Native American Voting Rights Act, which expands voting protections for Native Americans.

The sole GOP Senator to vote to advance the voting rights bill was Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. Listen to why she voted to advance the debate.

While the Senate was in the middle of the filibuster, Black Voters Matter and several other voting rights organizations marched from Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington D.C. The group is demanding lawmakers pass federal voting rights legislation, including the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement, and the Freedom the Vote Act.
