John's Gospel: What Do I Need To Do To Be Saved? (Part 2)

This study is a follow-up to, "What Do I Need To Do To Be Saved? (Part 1)" where Tim Conway continues to examine different ways people get confused when confronted with the question of how to be saved. There are many subtle ways by which a person can turn salvation into a work or qualification that they must complete in order for the Lord to save them. Tim goes through the Scriptures, specifically John's Gospel, to examine how the Bible itself specifically words things.

Getting into that wheelbarrow might seem scary but as we trust in His goodness and love towards us we can easily overcome that

Hi guys, could you help me understand in what way the finished work of Christ applies to me if I’m an unbeliever? I understand what Tim is saying, but I’m confused about what we trust Christ for? Do we just trust Him that he’s going to save us and wait for assurance? It sounds different to say what Horatius Bonar says in “God’s way of peace or what you guys say in your article of David Brainard. He must have died for unbelievers in some sense if they are allowed to take comfort in his finished work? Thank you

I have always had a wrong expectation of God and God was striving with me to lay it down for a long time and I did not know what it was but one day he showed me and enabled me to let it go but then I started to coast and backslid and started living in the expectation again and now I know it has destroyed my faith and I’ve been praying and praying that he’d help me surrender and everything but I know my heart is so hard and cold towards him and I know I don’t really desire Christ I don’t have hope in him I’m so scared.

The difference between the gospel of John and the other gospels is that it was written after the mystery of God was released to apostle Paul.

Colossians 1:24-27 KJVS
[24] Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: [25] Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; [26] Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: [27] To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Christ in you the hope of glory results in sanctification through suffering.

1 Peter 4:1-2, 12-13 KJVS
[1] Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; [2] That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. [12] Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: [13] But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

So what exactly does the a sinner need to do to be saved?

Philippians 2:12-13 KJVS
[12] Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. [13] For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Obey the will of God. And don’t worry God will let you know about the sin that is in your life.

Hebrews 12:4-8 KJVS
[4] Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. [5] And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: [6] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. [7] If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? [8] But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

So do I call upon Christ to save me until he does while doing all the things he says, knowing that doing those things do not save me?

The Gospel Jesus revealed to Paul for us -

1 Cor 15:1-4

Acts 16:30-31 “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”

Believe. Believing is receiving. Not faith and a prayer, water baptism, tithing, going to church, turning from sin (no, that’s not what the word repent means).

Believe.

John said “believe” .. what .. 99 times in his gospel?

Sounds like he does not understand that once we give our life to Christ... we walk in His righteousness... we walk in His perfect life not ours... we can't do it God has too

John 8:29-59
King James Version
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.

53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.

56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

You wanted John. And also more truth. I’m the one who was baptised by John the Baptist on the sabbath day. So now tell me what you want from me.

Rejected laughed at mocked beaten lied to cheated on I’ve faced it all. For evil wicked horrible selfish self centred Christians that were called to Love God with all mind heart and strength. And love thy neighbour like yourself. And from my perspective I see everything world wide. Alcoholics drunks drug abusers. Selling themselves for a fiver rather than putting their children first. Wow. What a lovely world. Hey. I give up I hate the world. Can’t stand it.
