Nowadays, things have changed. Getting a lower branch in IIT's is absolutely amazing because it opens wide range of opportunities for students to Intern in Cs based company and land a job too with a good package if they have good skills! Only perk they miss is campus placement by those tech giants but either ways they get hired by them outside of college.

People don't realize apart from your major (lets say Textile or Mining or even printing engineering😂) you can opt for Minor courses of any departments, i.e CS or Electrical which has job scopes. Also you should note in IIT all branches are eligible to sit in Software companies. So if have opted for minor courses of CS(let's say Machine learning, Image processing, computer vision) or in electrical (signal processing) you can still sit in Great placements along with your CS buddies.
However you cannot sit in Core placements of Other respective departments (analog design, RF from EE or Core departments from Mechanical or Civil)

So an advice for all aspirants, if you have got terrible branch in good iit. If you work hard, you have almost equivalent chance in placement as your CS buddies.
How can i say this with confidence? I am alumni of iit bombay @Electrical department. In Electrical we already have excellent placements almost as good as CS in core, so most of us didn't bother to sit in CS placements and very few guys from our department actually went to sit for Software companies in CS

Those who took Textile branch in IIT Delhi be like :- Mujhe IIT Delhi ka textile nahin chahiye koi lower rank NIT mein CSE dedo toh chalega par agar CS nahin mil toh IIT Delhi bhi nahin jaunge
Mujhe CSE ke bare kuch pata nahin na jindagi mein kabhi coding kiya hun par CSE hin lena hein kyun ki sab lete hein baki branch maa
