Herman is a very fine watercolourist, producing paintings full of atmosphere and light. Painting 'en plein air' he mixes traditional impressionistic values with versatility, with a strong emphasis on technique. In this film Herman paints in London, firstly beside the river Thames near Tower Bridge, then a view looking down Fleet Street, with the sunlight producing strong lights and darks. He then travels to the Cotswolds where he paints two views of the English countryside in summer.

really looking forward to this dvd - i've always admired heman as a painter who truly 'makes it look easy' - but his humor, passion, and energy only highlight his depth of knowledge and skill in composition and value organization. his ease and intuitive nature as an artist seem justly earned by much experience. an inspiration.

Herman Pekel is an artist with such a great sense of humour. (Don't you just love his Aussie accent in this video :-) Although public knows him mostly by his oils, and as a part of the Interlude (together with Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic, Nic Canosa and Patrick Carroll), he's an amazing watercolourist. Here he paints plein air, but his quirkiness and oddity makes his work spiritually different from today's impressionists — he can paint better laughing than others when dead serious.
