Hey Dr. Seheult. Not all RNA viruses actually have reverse transcriptase. Reverse transcriptase is almost exclusive to the family of viruses known as retroviruses except for a few special cases. Most RNA viruses will actually just proceed to replicate in the cytoplasm and never make a DNA intermediate. This works in 1 of 2 ways. In the case that a single-stranded RNA virus enters that is considered positive sense. Positive sense RNA mimics cellular mRNA, so it will just use RNA polymerase III to make a negative sense template for making more genomic positive sense. Furthermore, the positive sense serves as a template for making all the viral proteins. In a negative sense case, it's the opposite where the virus will use cellular enzymes to make a template positive sense that will now be recognized to make proteins using cellular ribosomes and have complimentary copies made which are the negative sense genome of that virus.

For Flaviviruses (of which Zika, Dengue, and Yellow Fever viruses belong), they have positivee sense single stranded RNA, so they will follow the former of the two aforementioned scenarios for single stranded RNA viruses. Thank you for making these videos, though. They are great!

FYI, as of this date, South Florida (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale region) is now under emergency ZIKA warning with mosquito awareness and chemical spraying. It is no longer just in the South American regions anymore.

Thanks very much for your video. I've watched some already, and decided to subscribe. I'm a med student living in Dominican Republic, so of course this video is of great use to me. Just yesterday coincidentally I was at a friend's dinner and a family member seemed to be presenting with Zika. It's everywhere in D.R... with MANY people having the G.B. complication...

Since when does the 'Zika Virus' cause Microcephaly? Before 2016 it was a well known mild illness that passed away after a few days.

Hi Dr. Seheult. I have one question concerning the diagnosis of zika virus through serology. Recently I read an article in the New England journal of medicine saying that they don't have sufficiently specific detection methods and that there are quite a lot of cross reactions. Which means that in a lot of cases it remains unclear whether the patient contracted dengue or zika. What is your comment on this? Thank you! :)
