I now have it on good authority that query port is the port you want to use. The Rust Wiki has been updated to reflect as such, so going forward there should be no confusion.

So at Rustopia, winterust and spoonkid we use game port not query port, this was off the back of advice directly from lama (FP dev who implemented the feature) as it would still work with the connect command if the queries and cache were both not working for some reason.

Also one more thing to note for people who are setting this up on an existing server. If you set up the SRV record and convar on your old server and them immediately change to your new server IP AND turn your old server off then players will not see the new server in their favorites. They need to load into the game and have the server browser ping the old server which will then send them the srv record for the new server (it will be saved in favorites.cfg on exit). So my advice to everyone is set this up asap so as many people as possible get the srv record before you change to your new server. If that can't happen then make sure your old server is online for as long as possible after you have the new server on.

Great video again bro! Got everything setup in about 15min, I used the Server game port and it works just fine.

So the SRV record -- that _udp part -- means that the protocol it wants. Rust Query port is UDP (vs TCP). Rust server/game port is TCP.

Great tutorial. I added SRV records on a self hosted DNS server using your tutorial and it all worked without a hitch. Thanks.
My only question is...After adding the SRV record, do you know if this updates players favorites the next time they log in or would they have to remove the favorites entry and re-add it ?

If I may add one small correction. At the end you say, "... if you've never even explored buying a domain none of this information is relevant to you". This would not be a correct statement, since those using a DNS service (Like NO-IP and such) due to having a dynamic IP from their ISP, this is a "God send"!

Could have done with this a week ago maybe(?), (with no warning) Server provider changed hardware overnight which changed ip....i've lost 99% of my player base because of that, server is now dead😑
