We live in a time where whatever lens you buy is probably the best lens ever made. I remember back in the 20zeros when the "new" Sigma 24-70 DG EX HSM f2.8 came out and the "new" Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L came out and both were weak as newborn kittens. The Sigma had horrible AF and the Canon had amazing but weighed as much as Volkswagen Beetle. I have also owned the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L Mark II, Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 ART OS, Sigma 24-70mm DG DN f2.8 ART Mark I and tested out the Sony GM as well. They are all amazing and the differences are so small its like comparing perfects with perfects. Its absolutely amazing the OPTICAL quality in lenses these days.

I needed a 24-70mm and waited 6 years for something to come up that would be budget friendly and fantastic and finally I bought it last week the sigma ii, I'm extremely happy 😊

Great job on the video Chris. Thanks for making it. I do love the Smooth/Tight switch on the G-Master, but the real reason I went with the Sony over the Sigma was the little switch the Sigma has instead of the focus ring tightener. That "Zoom Lock " they have isn't a lock at all, but more of a "Zoom Hold". It takes almost no pressure to get the lens to release it, and the fact that they call it a "lock" fills me with a disproportionate rage. If it actually locked onto my desired focal length and didn't allow for movement of the focal ring until manually disengaged, I would have likely bought the Sigma. But the day after I picked up the pre-production version of the Mark 2 Art lens, even while acknowledging that it is still a spectacular lens that is a vastly better buy than anything in its class, I ordered the Sony.

In Australia, both the Sigma MKII and Sony GM II are around 2.2k AUD lol
I own the GM II and have to say the Tight / Smooth dial is a game changer as someone who uses dual camera straps for photography I find the lens sagging and when I kneel down the lens may hit the floor. Having it on tight mode alleviates that problem completely! Not sure if the default of Sigma MK II is closer to the tight or smooth setting though?

I'm the sort of person that would get the Sony for that 1% different in stabilisation, but I didn't see a lot of difference in your test. I feel like it's more true with GM primes vs non GM/non Sony

The Northrups found that the Sigma missed focus quite often when focusing on the subject's eye. Very noticeable at f/2.8.

Sigma is still the way to go for 95% of all people. Also pretty clickbaity title.

The 2 things the Sony out performs the Sigma is with focus breathing and fps. 3rd party lenses are artificially capped to 15 fps by Sony. Personally i will never care about shooting more than 15 fps. Especially with a 24/70. Its not really a sports or wildlife focal range. And i would have to be a serious video shooter to care about focus breathing. So for me it would be the Sigma. But Sony really needs to stop with these restrictions they put in there cameras for 3rd party glass. Nikon is starting to get 3rd party glass and there is no restriction on them.

Probably important to mention that the Sony has linear manual focus and the Sigma does not. Could be a deal breaker for a lot of people.
