Part 2 in my very mini- series on freelancing! I talk about how to set your freelance rates, the importance of contracts and what to include in them, what sort of payment terms you should think about using, and how to protect yourself and manage your freelance clients.

It's important to protect yourself from scope-creep as a freelancer, and manage clients expectations, as well as value the work you do and know how to charge right for the work you do.

Whether you're a freelance artist, freelance animator, graphic designer, writer or other flavor of freelancer - these are tips that apply to pretty much any freelance career.

So, check out the advice in the video on just how to do that, and know how to work out what you should be charging for your freelance work and how you should be dealing with clients, negotiating freelance rates, to ensure a good relationship that both of you benefit from.

Don't forget to check out Part 1 for the other tips on networking, SEO and building up your client base and learn how to freelance successfully!

Ive come back to this vid as Im about to finish my masters in 2D animation and I wanted to take notes on your tips. Last time I missed something that you commented on that has happened to me personally. On minute 18:54 you state how some professionals are sometimes stuck doing low quality, shitty paying jobs. This happens because you attract clients that will only offer that.

So the moral of the story is: value yourself, your time and your skills. Its okey to decline shitty paying jobs.

If you do sell yourself short, STATE that this isn't your common rate and that you are doing a discount on your rates at the moment as a show of faith or to build a nice relationship with them. This will prevent them from always lowballing you and paying you little money on future jobs.

Hi Robyn! Very useful video! Thank you! I have another question, how can i calculate how much time a project will take me to finish in order to calculate how much to charge?
Especially, in cases i hadn't done something similar before?

What would you say is a good daily rate for a recently graduated animator?

🙌🙌🙌This is very helpful. I think for new people entering the freelance or contracting world it may be helpful to provide a tutorial about or on clients who “negotiate” or push back on rates and terms. I agree that getting a deposit as a sign of good faith is key, however, a bit more insight into these negotiations and scenarios in getting pen to paper. How to and when to walk away. Those kinds of skills are key to success.

I have another question. Sorry if it's been asked before. Would u recommend upon graduation and after I've gained skills and experience in animation, to look for a junior position??? Or to just go out on my own n freelance like u talk about in this video

Would you recommend studying animation at a university? I have general question about animation and game art... Will having a degree make you more employable as an animator and give you the skills? There are so many places to learn about animation nowadays online... E.g. school of motion, anim school, motion design school etc. Is studying animation online and being self-taught comparable to the skills taught during a degree program?

Another thing on the contracts, make sure your lawyer goes through it to check for loopholes and if it's on legal grounds. If you think you can't afford a lawyer, just ask first, and if it is? Ask around for others. Ultimately, make lawyer friends. :)
