I have a love-hate relationship with this engine. I currently drive the 2010 Golf Plus, but it's 1.6 engine is built like a tank and doesn't really have many points where it could break. No turbo charger and no fancy electrics that could break. It's been around since the mid 90's with minor changes to keep up with emission stuff. If you keep the oil intervals, this engine will run atleast 200k km's. But: It's very tired in the low RPM's as is typical with engines w/o turbos, you have to keep the revs high to keep up with fast moving traffic. And the second thing that annoys me is that it lacks a 6th gear, which doesn't help with fuel economy(!) and results in a very loud & stressed sounding 4 cylinder when doing upwards 130km/h...

I have a 2006 Golf (non plus) with this exact engine. It's great and it handles well thanks to fully independent suspension. You also can keep up with modern traffic, if you keep the revs high. The only problem is the lack of a sixth gear...it screams at highway speeds, 3000 rpm at 100 km/h in fifth gear. If you do 130-140 it's starting to get loud, it can be exhausting for long trips.
