What a year, a lot of comebacks this year from artists to songs, to Taylor taking over the top 10, I could go on. This year might’ve been boring, but there were definitely some iconic moments.

Also it still seems like the 2020s will be a crazy decade music wise

Looking back at 2022, it felt like a weird year. I mean, out of the 2020s so far, most songs I liked and that I added to my playlist came out / became hits during 2022. However, any of them bar 2 or 3 are among my favorites to be honest.

I was still very much into 2021's music during the early parts of the year, but I guess I wasn't the only one as very few new songs made an impact during those first months. And then spring came, and everything came back to life, almost as it Harry opened the door allowing new music to finally come in.

If 2020 was the year of the freefalls and 2021 was the year of mass-buying, 2022 was the year of album bombs. Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar, Future, Lil Baby, Drake, Taylor, SZA, Metro Booming, and others that created chaos below the top 10; It's no wonder that very few songs made enough points to join the building 2020s Decade-End list in such scenario.

In that last regard, 2022 reminds of 2017: few gigantic hits that occupied the top 10 forever, with very few other ones making it. In 2017, those were Shape Of You, That's What I Like, Despacito, Bodak Yellow, Rockstar...and nothing else. In 2022, it was Heat Waves, As It Was, Easy On Me (with some points shared with 2021), Anti-Hero (with some points shared with 2023), and About Damn Time (barely making it)

But yeah, 2022 was still a good year for pop music

So the year is finally over…how do I think about the music of 2022? After the amazing years of 2020 and 21…it’s alright. The first 4 months was an incredibly slow one, with a lot of 2021 holdovers and no big splashes as you would expect, to the point where musical numbers from a Disney movie were becoming top hits. After that though, this year is notable for being the apex of both throwbacks but also a trend of obvious sampling from older songs, not just from the 80s but from all decades. If there is one thing 2022 will be known for, it will be how much it looks into the past, for better and for worse. People have been saying this is a generic year, but in retrospect I think it is a completely abnormal year with how weird the music charts has been. The huge shockwaves of Encanto, The Mass album bombs in the Spring, the return of Running Up That Hill, and lastly Taylor Swift taking over the entire top 10 will be well known many years in the future.

Synth-pop, Country and most surprisingly Raggaeton were the biggest genres this year. Bad Bunny’s album had a surprisingly powerful and long lasting impact on music and further cemented Spanish music as a mainstay in popular music. Hip Hop is still dominated by Trap, but it is fracturing in several directions. R&B and Rock stay on the sidelines, despite both genres scoring big hits as well. K Pop falls out of the limelight, and samples of all sorts are creeping into every genre. 2023 seems set to be an exciting year that can go numerous directions, but time will tell how it goes.

Overall, I see a lot of people think 2022 was a “bad” year and I can see why. There was a lot of slowdown, and plenty of songs overstayed their welcome, and the throwbacks and lack of progress were getting more and more obvious, plus following up 2021 was always going to be tough. Regardless, I still think this was a decent year overall with plenty to talk about positively, and despite a lot of bland stuff there isn't a lot of outright terrible music. It feels like a calm before the storm year like 1991, so I guess we'll see what legacy this year will have in the future.

That’s it for my chart analysis posts! I’ll see you all for 2023! Thanks to Rafael Lorino again for making these videos and staying committed throughout!

Best and worst #1s of the year: Bad Habit by Steve Lacy (One of the few songs this year that I feel was actually progressing popular music. I can’t wait for what he does next) and Super Freaky Girl by Nicki Minaj (The polar opposite approach and it saddens me this was her first #1 hit when she’s done way better stuff in the past)

As It Was was the best song of 2022 (and of all time)! Then Anti Hero was the second best song of 2022! Hope both songs have great and strong chart life in 2023!

Taylor holding the top 10, I’m proud to say that my fave Gaga would never do that ❤

the fact Taylor Swift and Drake and 21 savage still managed to keep 4/10 on their second weeks really shows their power some artists can only or can't even do that on their first week

This year was pretty weird. Tho it’s historic as this year Taylor swift and drake took up the entire top 10 well drake 8 but still).First artists to do so. This is just like 1995 when MJ, Mariah and Whitney all debuted at number 1.
