I've always thought that it could go any one of the ways these men are speaking about.
One interesting thought I've had is that if it is anything like a dream, then I could imagine there being what we would see as the last breath and the last heart beat. For the person actually passing there could be what he experiences to be something that isn't bound by the confines of time. To say it slows down possibly, in those minutes. An eternity could exist in those last few sparks of brain activity. :)

If consciousness exists outside of the body is it possible that one could “walk through“ someone else’s consciousness that then is manifested in the “walkers” brain?
