For trips less than 200 to 500 km, where a more ecological mode of transport is available, one should avoid flying and governments could even restrict such routes. From city center to city centre (Porto-Lisbon) a train is available, with around 3:20h travel time. Taking into account security checks at the airport, and travel to and from the airport, that is still a bit longer than the flying option probably, but it is reasonable because much less damaging for the environment. I can only hope governments will ever increase taxes on kerosene and flight tickets to create revenue that can then be reinvested in high speed rail. This ofcourse inly makes sense if the train uses greeen energy, not diesel. In my opinion travellers should already now make active choices pro-rail, and for those who don’t, lets organize some fly-shaming.
