Photosynthesis is the process by which leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny openings and chlorophyll in leaf captures the light energy from the sun, splits carbon dioxide and water and recombines the carbon into sugars. It takes leaves to grow leaves. Just like trees and other plants, grass converts energy from sunlight into sugar through the process of photosynthesis. This energy is used to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose. Plants use chlorophyll to photosynthesize the Sun's energy into plant energy. Through the photosynthesis process, producers, such as grass, absorb the Sun's light energy to produce food (stored sugar and starches). Photosynthesis is how plants convert the Sun's energy into their energy. Like all plants, grass plants in your lawn take in carbon dioxide from the air. Then, as part of the process of photosynthesis, those grasses help produce the oxygen you breathe. Healthy lawns are remarkably efficient at oxygen production. It's not a well-known fact that a grass lawn produces oxygen for our environment at a far greater rate than the same area of trees. One acre of trees with full canopy coverage produces enough oxygen for between 8 and 18 people. The same acre in just grass cover produces enough for 70 people! Maize, sugar cane, and sorghum are C4 plants. These plants are economically important in part because of their relatively high photosynthetic efficiencies compared to many other crops. But did you know that some grasses can be used as a source of energy? In this energy science fair project, you will learn more about a type of energy called biomass energy. You will grow different kinds of grasses and see which type of grass gives you the most biomass, which will produce the most energy. Lawns are an excellent producer of oxygen. A lawn area 50 ft x 50 ft produces enough oxygen for the daily needs of a family of four. An acre of grass will produce enough oxygen for 64 people a day. Grass is a plant, so it takes in carbon dioxide from the air and produces oxygen through the photosynthesis process. A healthy lawn is very efficient at producing oxygen, and a 50sq ft lawn will create enough per annum to meet the oxygen needs of a family of four. Ruminants are animals such as wild and domestic cattle, sheep, deer, antelopes, giraffes, and goats that are champions when it comes to the eating and digestion of grasses and other plant material. Cattle and sheep have the most sophisticated digestive systems when it comes to digesting grass. All the energy grass absorbs from the Sun is eventually lost to the surroundings. In what form is this energy lost? Heat from respiration. Will grass grow in the shade? Most lawn grasses need four to six hours of direct sun to survive. Some shade-tolerant grass types grow as long as light hits that four-hour quota – and that light doesn't have to be full sun. Four to six hours of dappled or filtered sunlight can fuel the growth of a healthy lawn. The highest oxygen-producing plants include Boston ferns, weeping figs, aloe vera, spider plants, gerbera daisies, areca palms, peace lilies, golden pathos, money plants, and snake plants.

Grass is a type of plant with narrow leaves growing from the base. Their appearance as a common plant was in the mid-Cretaceous period. There are 12, 000 species now.[3] A common kind of grass is used to cover the ground in places such as lawns and parks. Grass is usually the color green. That is because they are wind-pollinated rather than insect-pollinated, so they do not have to attract insects. Green is the best colour for photosynthesis.
Grasslands such as savannah and prairie where grasses are dominant cover 40.5% of the land area of the Earth, except Greenland and Antarctica.[4]
Grasses are monocotyledon herbaceous plants. They include the "grass" of the family Poaceae, which are called grass by ordinary people. This family is also called the Gramineae, and includes some of the sedges (Cyperaceae) and the rushes (Juncaceae).[5] These three families are not very closely related, though all of them belong to clades in the order Poales. They are similar adaptations to a similar life-style.
With around 780 genera and around 12, 000 species, [3] the Poaceae is the fifth-largest plant family, after the Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae.[6]
The true grasses include cereals, bamboo and the grasses of lawns (turf) and grassland. Uses for graminoids include food (as grain, sprouted grain, shoots or rhizomes), drink (beer, whisky), pasture for livestock, thatching thatch, paper, fuel, clothing, insulation, construction, sports turf, basket weaving and many others.
Many grasses are short, but some grasses can grow tall, such as bamboo. Plants from the grass family can grow in many places and make grasslands, including areas which are very arid or cold. There are several other plants that look similar to grass and are referred to as such, but are not members of the grass family. These plants include rushes, reeds, papyrus and water chestnut. Seagrass is a monocot in the order Alismatales.
Grasses are an important food for many animals, such as deer, buffalo, cattle, mice, grasshoppers, caterpillars and many other grazers. Unlike other plants, grasses grow from the bottom, so when animals eat grass they usually do not destroy the part that grows.[7] This is a part of why the plants are successful. Without grass, soil may wash away into rivers (erosion).
