7500rpm Nissan L28 Engine Dyno - 350hp

IT’S always impressive when a naturally aspirated engine makes over 100hp per litre, and even more so when it’s using an older-style engine. While we were down at Powerhouse Engines working on my Nissan RB30 turbo build (read about it in the August mag), we saw this stout Datsun L28 motor being run up on the dyno, making around 350hp.

Street Machine is Australia’s number-one modified car magazine, bringing V8-powered good times since 1981.

My L series is currently with Les for a rebuild - it couldn't be in better hands!
Great video Street Machine!

The biggest problem with getting a LOT of horsepower out of the L-series engines is the lack of a cross-flow head. Have the intake and exhaust ports on the same side severely limits port size and flow characteristics. That being said, they did pretty well on this one to get that kind of performance out of it!😉

More than 80 lb/ft of torque per liter on an old 2-valve reverse flow head? Pretty amazing... would love to know what compression ratio and headwork has been done!

Oh my god a dyno operator that uses a step test instead of accel. top man..

Ooh was that an intake backfire at 0:23?

Glad to see people still building these, the RB swap seems to be the go to option for older Nissan/Datsun cars.

This chain driven engine doesnt have my RB25ETs belt driven harmonics nor the awfull small six Triumph 2500 drone. The first Datsun six Ive come to respect. I really hate narrow bore spacing engines, the Toyota in line JZs and L's and RBs. Ive had a great run with my LD28s and RB25's but only this one has the sound I like. Les, you rock the Red Centre. Looks like an LD28 crank got put to good use. And the 350 hp at just 7000 rpm from a 3.4 litre....Nice one Australia!

Wow, that sounds so amazing. It sounds like it wants to never stop running…

Sounds like my neighbor trying to spin a rod bearing every morning at 6am...

Very cool
Have a look at "the green hornet the joy of driving"to see one of these motors in a Datsun 240Z

What rating octane number (RON) is?? And what number compression ratio?

Its really hard to tell by the angle of the video but it looks like the third throttle body is not opening at the same rate as the first. Just an observation from what is visible from the video.

That was a weird way to dyno an engine, I wonder why the prolonged loading like that? Usually you rev it all the way through under a predetermined load and shut it down
